Day 20 Thursday 17th May
Broome to Cape Leveque
Odometer 22437 Temp 27
Our accommodation included breakfast, cereal, yoghurt, eggs, toast, muffins, croissant and fruit salad. We filled up on fuel at the Woolworths ($1.69.9) and purchased some groceries on our way out of town. It was midday before we made it to the Beagle Bay Broome Road on our way to Cape Leveque. Initially the road was sealed but it wasn't long before we hit dirt and felt the effect of the corrugations.
We planned to detour via Beagle Bay to see the Beagle Bay Sacred Church a 10mins detour off the main road. The community was established by Trappist Monks around 1980. It wasn't until 1915 work started on the church we saw today. Entry to the church was by gold coin donation.
We were back on the road by 1400. We stopped at the turnoff to Cape Leveque and spoke to a couple whose vehicle was being towed by a 12 year old camel. They had purchased a 4-5year old camel and were walking back to Broome.
We had been told the road out to Cape Leveque was not suitable for our car. It wasn't until the last 5kms we were bulldozing the sand as we went.
We arrived around 4pm. After checking in we booked the sunset cruise $75pp in a glass bottom boat before heading to our accommodation.
We had enough time to unpack before meeting our guide. We were driven past the beach side bungalows along the beach to a very rustic looking boat.
They provided some nibbles of cheese, dip and biscuits and we had grabbed a bottle of wine from our supplies. It was still light enough to see the reef, and we spotted a few fishes an eagle ray and a giant clam.
The crew threw out two fishing lines. No one was interested in reeling them in when they snagged a fish. Mark pulled in both reels. The first fish got away and he landed a 3kg Trevally which he threw back in.
Unfortunately the sunset wasn't anything special.
We had prebooked dinner at the restaurant for 6.30. I had pepper steak which was perfectly cooked and Mark had two entrees, duck liver pate(very yum) and pork belly. I would suggest bringing the bug spray and don't forget to bring you own wine as you can't purchase alcohol at the resort.
Mileage 407kms
