Fitzroy Crossing to Broome

Day 20 Wednesday 16th May
Fitzroy Crossing to Geikie Gorge(21kms each way) to Broome
(397kms 4 1/2hrs)
Odometer 22030  Temp 11-32
Our plans today included heading out to Geikie Gorge to do the boat tour. Because you can’t book the tour Mark decreed we needed to be there early. We were in the car and on the road by 6.30. We were the 2nd car to arrive a little before 7am. Whilst we were waiting  we had breakfast and looked around the information boards at the information shelter.

The boat tour left at 8am and lasted one hour. We sat five abreast in one of the two punts. The limestone walls tower over the river in amazing shades of brillliant red and white.

We saw four fresh water crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks of the gorge.

I managed to convince Mark to do the Reef walk, which runs along the same path as the river. The walk took us about 1.5 hours and follows the trail across the floodplains to the point where the western gorge wall meets the river.

The first 800m of the walk is through sand

and took us past numerous South American passionfruit and burrs.

The drive back to Broome took 3 1/2hrs and was uneventful. Our accommodation was at Barefoot Bungalows our second B n B in Broome.

Our host Brad was very helpful and offered to book any tours we were interested in doing. I declined to book tours as we were off to Cape Leveque the next day. I should have at least made enquiries into a camel ride on Cable Beach as when we returned from Cape Leveque there was no sunset camel rides available. Brad recommended having dinner at Diver’s Tavern as Mark and I like ribs. We shared a rib platter for 2 ($52) and our maitre’d Rob recommended a bottle of wine –White Fuschia by Happs, yum.

Mileage (397kms 4 1/2hrs)
Total Mileage 9085
